The only part I knew about this is the statement by Will that he helped Reagan prep for the debate and then went on ABC and praised Reagan in the debate. He was clearly wearing two hates and shouldn't have commented or told listeners he was working for Reagan. Either way, a very shabby use of journalism by Will. It took him many decades to leave the gop and he has. He gets points for admitting he wronged Carter, didn't tell listeners of his work for Reagan and his leaving the party.
