I see no reason why reciprocal trade agreements cannot be achieved via trade agreements like TPP unless the cartel agrees to give discounts or lower barriers to entry based on the size of exports. That's similar to giving a discount for buying in bulk. US is basically a rapid consuming nation so there will be more imports than exports. Why force China to buy more when they don't need to do so?

It seems to me that Trump likes to argue primarily for the sake of arguing. The more you eat the fatter you get. If you are going to import more than you export in dollar terms, there will be a trade balance. Maybe the solution is that USA should watch what they consume or eat less.

I think it's ridiculous and a waste of time to set up a trade agreement with every country. US could have considered TPP and at least seen if the terms of the agreement were to its liking. If not, then don't join. But at least try to negotiate a good deal for your country first.

Fact of the matter is that Trump hates big free trade agreements. And he hates them because he is paranoid that the more countries that are involved in the trade agreement, the more they will look to slant the terms of the agreement in their favor as exporters. So, it's better to negotiate one on one.

In a recession, there will be no trade imbalance to worry about.
