There is a strong impetus for MSFT to shift to the subscription business model. This lowers the volatility of thier revenue stream by eliminating the need for a upgrade pattern. This method also coincides with the business models currently used by the cable and printed media industries.

Shifting the dominant paradigm away from resource-intensive but industry leading confluent mindsets will only serve to enhance the emergence of various technologies that might affect the business processes.

Sorry, I just had to.

You don't have to upgrade your newspaper, all the processing is done in a central location.

As soon as the processing becomes distributed, it becomes *very* important to do this in a planned, coherent, network-aware way. I'm not convinced that MSFT has the mindset needed to do this. LU, MOT, and several others would be good bets. I'm not even sure SUN has the required skills.
