I think "elitist" might be a better word in this context than "elite".

Elite could either be a rough synonym for best or most capable, or it could mean someone with more power or a higher status. The former part is certainly not what people are using that word to mean. That latter part sometimes is what's meant in these attacks on political elite, but I don't think its the core point people are trying to raise.
