How do you know that?

Because that is how the sequence of events happened?

Take Murray's Fishtown, which he uses as a shorthand for the deterioration of the white underclass. It wasn't until the deindustrialization resulted in rising poverty that the social deterioration occurred. It wasn't the other way around.

Having been responsible does not guarantee protection from future adverse events that may occur.

Nope. There is a huge luck factor.

So that means that we should just forget about being responsible because there's no guarantee of a payoff? Why try?

You lost me there. How did you get from the earlier statement to here?

As to your thoughts on security leading to pathology, I find those ideas weird. Quality of life should count for something. That only the very wealthy, especially those born into wealth, can lead a stress-free or at least low stress life is very elitist. Because if you live your whole life on your toes, constantly on edge and under the gun, only to die young from a variety of stress related diseases just doesn't seem like much of an existence.
