There are a lot of factors that feed into the AMOC(which is just one of many terms for what is essentially the same thing). It originally became an issue when it was noted that the melting of the Greenland glaciers resulted in a layer of fresh water interfering with the downwelling off the coast that fed the entire system. In addition, the reduction in surface ice around Greenland threatened to shift the Gulfstream to the south, reducing the heat transfer to northern Europe.
