He was just really hungry, I think. He had been eating birdseed from beneath the bird feeder which consisted mainly of sunflower seed empty shells. Felt kind of bad for him but no way was I going to feed him. My next door summer neighbors toss all their leftovers into their side yard rather than taking their garbage home when they leave, which attracts them. They even bring back crab shells and other shells from the beach which raccoons apparently love. Last year they only came for 2 weekends but even in that short time the raccoons knew there was a food source. When they leave the raccoons are left to wonder where their next meal is. I wish they wouldn't do it but, sadly, they're not the only summer folks that do it. They wouldn't do it at home so why do it here and have the permanent residents have to deal with it? (Sorry, got on a bit of a rant there.)

As for rabies, that likely would have been a concern if I lived elsewhere. Cases of rabies around here are extremely rare and the couple that have occurred came from bats. They weren't in this County. The most recent one was about 8 years ago and that one was the first in over 20 years prior to that, if memory serves...and I admit it often doesn't.

We do have a fair amount of bats (3 of which somehow got into my fireplace on 3 separate occasions...those were not fun because they couldn't find their way out so I had grab them and put them outside which freaked me out) and the big worry about bats this year is that white nose disease that seems to be hitting them hard.
