Sowell, as I suspected I would find, was anything BUT a brilliant man. A bit of googling came up with this gem:

Since neither the creationists nor the evolutionists were there when the world began, why are our schools teaching either set of beliefs, when there are so many hard facts that the schools are failing to teach?

his academic output as I noted, seems non-existent.

The guy was interested in and had something to say about a relevant subject, one that remained relevant during his whole lifetime, and he made a career out of it. Is that not the advice we give high school kids looking ahead to their lives, to find something satisfying for which they can be compensated? He found a niche that provided a successful career over a lifetime. Do we fault a satisfied nurse for not having become a doctor? CJ posted favorably just the other day about people being satisfied to rest on their laurels and not look for further challenge and reward in their work. I can't fault the guy for not going beyond social commentary when that worked for him.

You seem miffed that he's considered a public intellectual when he didn't continue to pursue academics. I get that. But I got something from him. The most critical assessment I could make is that of a one-trick pony.
