Tim will argue I should evaluate his other ideas on their merits, not on what he might say on a different topic. My counter to that is I suspect the exact same modes of thought, attention to data and theory, and methods were applied in both topics, and one I'm quite competent to judge him on, so no point in wasting time on anything else he might have looked at.

Actually one thing does occur to me about Sowell. Any reasonably talented black in America can have a sinecure for life if they embrace the conservative-libertarian world view and write as though they convincingly believe it. So its possible Thomas Sowell is not actually the idiot he makes himself out to be, but is instead simply embracing a role that he had the insight to see as a very good career path, especially for someone who couldn't in fact compete in the actual academic world.

To a certain degree, that is actually what the entire conservative-libertarian enterprise is all about, as expressly stated by Irving Kristol. He advocated setting up conservative Think Tanks to produce "research" compatible with conservative ideology, since conservatives couldn't compete in the University system. So they made a Faux Research system instead. Now we have Fox as the natural end point of that. "News" that is compatible with conservative values.

Perhaps you didn't understand that comment.

"The worldwide crusade to ban the pesticide DDT is a classic example. This crusade was begun by the much revered Rachel Carson, whose best-selling book "Silent Spring" was based on the premise that DDT's adverse effects on the eggs of song birds would end up wiping out these species. After that, springtime would no longer be marked by birds singing; hence the silent spring.

Rachel Carson and the environmentalists she inspired have succeeded in getting DDT banned in country after country, for which they have received the accolades of many, not least their own accolades. But, in terms of the actual consequences of that crusade, there has not been a mass murderer executed in the past half-century who has been responsible for as many deaths of human beings as the sainted Rachel Carson. The banning of DDT has led to a huge resurgence of malaria in the Third World, with deaths rising into the millions.

Here is some good advice:

Don't argue with Sowell's statements unless you have fully researched them. He isn't often wrong. Obviously, not in this instance.

==============

For years now Sowell has been a leading activist in " New Deal denialism," believing it worsened the economy and that the stock market crash didn't cause as high unemployment as government intervention in the economy. [19]

Those of us who have studied this subject are well aware of this.

You ought to spend some time with Dr. Sowell.

Oh. A DDT fan. Well, that says a lot.

Few things take a denial of reality more than being a DDT worshipper.

From his list, he seems to be one of those knee-jerk opposers of "liberal" causes. Everything from evolution to Rachel Carson.

None of those things give him credit as a "thinker". Compulsive opposition to things just to be opposed to them doesn't take much in the way of thought.
