When I say they are the smartest, I do not mean literally the smartest, I mean "as smart as humans get in the aggregate".

Kind of like when you say psychobabble, you don't literally mean psychobabble, but more like "I disagree very strongly and think your statements are completely wrong and stupid".

At least here your intended meaning is a bit closer to the normal meaning of the actual word you choose, but still when you using your own private language communication with people who don't share that language becomes rather difficult. You didn't just say "smartest", which could be smartest of their type, or smartest in some class or grouping you put them in, you said "the smartest and most honest people the human species has produced anywhere on earth", which makes it an absolute not just a limited comparative statement. And an absolute for both intelligence and honesty.
