No one in my wife's family ever had diabetes either. She had gestational diabetes with her first two kids and it went away after the births. Then she developed the full blown variety 4 years later at the age of 28. The doctors had to "experiment" with her for a weekend or two to figure out which variety she was.

Just to be clear, my old friend also believes his diet was responsible for his diabetes and because you are not overweight is not a reason to ignore what you eat.
