Following is a response from TMF's author, Louis Corrigan, regarding the TMF article and a question I asked (short interest). XXX (My name), I didn't check the short interest, but if it is around 4.6 million then any signs of life could cause the shorts to cover. I suspect most of them have done pretty well. On the other hand, some may have covered already and been responsible for the mini-rally to start the new year (that way, their profits fall in '98). Then again, companies with convertible debt offerings usually have a relatively high level of structural short interest since the debtors are basically just protecting their downside risk through arbitrage. That is, these guys won't be covering...until the debt is actually converted to stock or paid back. The real issue is the company's business and its valuation. The former still looks pretty good to me, while the latter appears to discount much of the risk. Then again, earnings season should tell us a lot about how much Asia's troubles are impacting sales. Louis Following is my original E mail: Dear Fool, Thanks for your excellently written summary of Cymer Inc and the path that this stock has been through during the last few months. One thing you did not mention, however, is the heavy short interest on this stock. As of Nasdaq's January 14, 1998 (should be December 14, 1997) monthly report date, total short interest outstanding was 4.6 million shares, out of a stock that trades roughly 0.5 million shares a day normally. I personally believe that this short interest had something to do with the weakness of Cymi in the past, as well as company's mishap ("risk" etc.), worries you mentioned in your writing, and the Asian Flu. However, this same short interest might also have a strong impact to bring back Cymi stock price to its reasonable value ($30 in my view), or even above if outlook is better. What do you think of the short interest of Cymi ? Would greatly appreciate your response. Sincerely, XXX A Cymi Stock Holder and, A Brave or Naive Cymi Buyer at the $15 level
