There may be something to that. Last quarter the MSFT lawsuit was announced at about this time. Given SUNW's relative lack of strength today I think there is an outside chance (20%) that earnings will be in line or slightly below 0.55. However, in the past the stock moves a lot (usually in the risght direction) in advance of earnings. The flattish move in a narrow range is quite unusual

I tried to buy some 42.5 puts today but my limit order did not go through. Hopefully, with INTC's earnings we get a bounce tomorrow mornings which will allow me to buy the Jan 42.5 puts for 3/4.

If I had to bet, I still think they will meet or beat estimates.

Alok

Why would you think that the earning report is going to be poor
on Thursday?

But you may have a point if the earning report is not so good, it
may act as an buffer to alleviate the negative response on the
market. But on the other hand, it could enhance it if the
report is good. Personally, I think it has more to do with
the logistics of dealing with the analyst and the press.
It is easier to announce the products closer to earning reports
... etc.

As far as I know, the Darwin announcment came late by a quarter,
I don't think this was a calculated move by sun. I think they
already know that Darwin was going to be a hit before the
product was even announced.

Does anyone think that Sun might have timed this week's announcements to offset effect of poor earnings report on Thursday?
Disclosure: I have a vested interest in Sun being 40 or less on Friday.

If they wanted to do that, they would have announced the news on Thursday afternoon right after they announce their earnings!! That sure makes a lot more sense to offset the effects of possible bad earnings! No, I dont think their earnings is going to be horrible, it will be in line with possible 1 or 2 penny short. But if this to be the case it is OK!

What is most important is what they are going to say in their conference call and how they are going to say it! My only concern is their overly exposure to Japan, but I think Europe and US should make that up for them for at least the next 2 years or so especially in light of their new thin client computing model and the great demand for servers in 98 and beyond!
