One could say the great invention theory e.g. a written language, printing press and books.

Without a written language and books we would still be eating each other.

You don't think great men have great influence on history?

What would you say about Bill Gates? Watson & Crick? Don Knuth and Turing? Dennis Ritchie?

Einstein, Newton, Bohr?

Churchill, FDR?

Do these people absolutely control history? Of course not. But one might even define a great man (or woman) as someone who has an inordinate effect on history.

So, I guess I could subscribe to that theory if it makes you feel better.
