Although I'm an EE, I was lucky enough to get all but 2 qtrs of Classical Mechanics of a BS in Physics, and then I got a couple more quarters of QM in grad school as well. But it was taking the Physics Depts Statistical Mechanics instead of the Eng Dept Thermodynamics that I really look back on as being an excellent choice. EE's were allowed to take the physics course while ME's had to take the ME course.

First rate book that presents the history of Quantum Mechanics is the followi

Quantum: Einstein, Bohr and the Great Debate About the Nature of Reality

amazon.com

It is well written, IMO, and covers the subject well.

Check out the reviews. I agree with the top few. I hope to find time to read it again at some point. For me, it was not something I totally consumed in one pass.
