You should pick up a book on Statistical Thermodynamics. The laws of Classical Thermodynamics were all formulated by much observation, experimentation, and then tweaking equations, rinse and repeat. What most people think of as real science. Then Statistical Mechanics came along, and by starting with very simple elements, namely space having volume (so dimension) and N, number of particles, and then applying statistics, it was able to derive all the results of Classical Thermodynamics essentially as a pure mathematical sandbox outing. And by so doing, it shed light on what had been essentially a lot of mysteries.

The big mystery in physics remains why gravity is the oddball and can't be integrated with everything else.
