Planned Parenthood Sues to Avoid Health Inspections by peterheck To be clear, the organization that says it cares about women and their interests is suing to avoid protecting women. For those still harboring any delusion that Planned Parenthood cares about the well-being of women, their recently filed lawsuit against my home state of Indiana should relieve you of those. In case you haven’t heard: A new Indiana law that requires medical providers who treat women for complications arising from abortions to report detailed patient information to the state “imposes unique and burdensome obligations” that are unconstitutional, Planned Parenthood said in lawsuit filed Monday that seeks to block two of the law’s provisions. The federal suit — the latest of several filed in recent years challenging abortion restrictions passed by Indiana lawmakers — contends that the reporting rules and a separate provision requiring annual inspections of abortion clinics are both unconstitutional because they target only abortions and abortion providers and not other procedures or clinics. To clarify, Indiana has decided that since abortion is an extremely invasive and potentially dangerous procedure for the pregnant woman (obviously it is dangerous to the child since the purpose of the act is to dismantle her), any facility that offers those “services” should be forced to have routine health inspections and the same expectations for reporting medical complications as all other medical facilities. But in a classic case of, “We’re a healthcare facility – oh wait, just kidding, no we aren’t – yes we are again – well we are when it benefits us to say we are,” Planned Parenthood wants to avoid any accountability for the health and safety of the patients they see. Unsurprisingly, the ACLU of Indiana took up their case and filed it under the same district court judge who regularly gives them the rulings that they want. The lawsuit was expected by Indiana Right to Life, whose executive director Mike Fichter took time to note the irony: “Almost every time Indiana lawmakers pass legislation to protect women’s health and safety, the abortion giant runs to activist judges to block the laws.” Now, why would that be? Is it possibly that the primary focus of Planned Parenthood isn’t their clients’ safety but rather their client’s bank accounts? themaven.net
