Yeah, as I said, it all has to do with the internals of the countries. Russia was no different. In fact, the only real screw up in Russia was the free market ideologues in the USA who with their weight on the IMF and their rush to dismantle communism, resulted in the wholesale creation of the Oligarchy in Russia, the effects of which still plague the planet today. The Chinese by contrast have done a far better job of modernizing. With any luck, if NK actually does start to liberalize, they will ignore any "advice" from the USA, and do things more the Chinese way.
