It depends on where you are.

South Africa is essentially 100% coal. Other African countries are highly dependent on coal. Mongolia, too, is almost 100%. 3/4 of China's energy continues to be coal. India, 3/4 -- but Modi has committed to a heavy investment in renewables.

It takes time to transition away from coal to the next big thing. And the people in these countries have to be willing to take the economic hit of paying far more for energy. Just like Obama said, we can move to renewables but energy costs will go sky high. It is something you do over time. In 20 years coal will be far less important around the world.

But South Africa couldn't get a shit about coal. They're facing a water shortage that will likely become a humanitarian crisis in July if something isn't done. Are they worried about coal? I doubt it.
