Most killing is related to people who are criminals even before they kill. Your chance of "getting shot by random strangers unrelated to crime" is low whether or not it involves a mass shooting". Mass shootings account for a very small part of murders, and your chance of being near one, let alone being shot during one, is tiny. (Particularly if you use a definition stressing "mass" rather then say any killing of three or four people at once being "mass")

As for motivations for mass killings there are all sorts of different ones. Some are terrorist related or connected to drug crime or other criminal activity (unless your using a definition of mass killing that excludes these, as is often but not always the case but if you due than some of the most notorious mass killings don't qualify), others are from some sort of revenge motive and/or because the killer has severe mental problems.
