Unless Borland management is brain dead or have a death wish then the statement about future earnings is very important.

I have absolutely no doubt that Borland will hit the predictions. Del seems to have been very careful to establish as many accruals as would be credible at the end of his first quarter as CEO. By my estimate, there were about $0.05 per share of these still sitting in his back pocket at the beginning of the quarter.

But to my mind the motivation for the announcement (which was after all, kinda neutral in its news content) was simply to stem the flow of selling for a while.
