Last year Charlie Trimble commented that the manager of the Motorola GPS unit was "under the gun" to get some results. So, the push is not surprising.

The UT Plus Oncore appears to be an upgraded model.

<<Topic for discussion: Is Motorola becoming the true competitor?

I'm noticing Motorola trying to establish itself in some of the same important areas as TRMB, such as:

AVL
Car Nav
Timing Devices>>

Motorola's strengths are in RF communications and semiconductors, so they have the core competence to be a serious competitor. They also have traditional ties with the auto industry as TI and MOT supply the bulk of the embedded microprocessors that are now designed into US cars as a matter of course. An auto industry RFI/EMI engineer told me that it is now almost impossible to run an aftermarket coaxial cable anywhere in a new car that doesn't run over one of those "smart" boxes with the potential of your device disrupting some function or having the function possibly interfere with your receiver.

At the same time, MOT doesn't have the depth or breadth in GPS applications that TRMB does. So while they have deep pockets, the threat would probably be that of a key design-in in one or two markets but with extremely high volume based on lowest cost which MOT can do well if they set it as a priority. If they don't get such a high-volume design-in in the next couple of years, they could fade away.
