I agree, taking matches is not smart, they only get wet and you run out of them too quickly... I do like a magnesium stick...

In that video, the guy is making it far more difficult than it really is... you don't need to tape the batteries together and you don't need to make a string of steel wool, and you don't need that much steel wool...

Just place the small piece of steel wool of standard size next to some dry tinder, and then place the two batteries, one at each end of the steel wool, with one - and one + end at each side of the steel wool, and it immediately ignites... it's really very simple...
