Thomas - thanks for responding to my post. If I recall correctly, are you in the Netherlands? Anyway - interesting article on the si board from Michael Pinson re: WDC. Recommended as a buy longterm.

From his lips to god's ears.

6.4GB at $300 retail...

I bought an IBM 6.4GB EIDE drive in retail packaging from Best Buy in Princeton, NJ for $300 US. If Best Buy (a computer superstore) is selling t hem for $300, OEM's must be getting them for $250. The 6.4 GB was the best buy of the lot. Maxtor had 5.1 GB and 7.0 GB models but those were both more than $300. It looks to me like we are pointing to Asia for competition, when in fact it may be IBM.

The same thing is happening in DRAM. The price leader is not a dumping Asian company, but Micron Technology itself. If we want increased pricing, it will have to be the U.S. firms that ease off, too. My sense is that there is probably a little revenge going on for years of cutthroat competition. Now Micron and IBM are the productivity leaders and everyone else is paying for it.

Good luck,
Matt
