"one could argue Bernie was the "third party" who helped sink Hillary"
This one has done that.

Alex, running outside the Democratic party is much different than running inside the Democratic party. You are one of the smartest and most honest people on SI and if you cannot see that, it shows what others are not understanding. Competing third parties are the death nail and the only thing that could sink us in 2020, IMO.

Bernie did everything by the rules and no different than Obama. We cannot stop the competition of the nominating process in the Democratic party. Where would that lead to? Bernie represented a large and very valid section of the Democratic party, the liberal wing.

Had Stein run in the Democratic primary I would not have said a word. And the damage would have been much less as her supporters would have gone to Hillary as she would have been out, but she bashed Hillary to the end.

I agree with you about Bernie staying in too long. I also lamented about that. He did it to get a more liberal platform, but was taking the same stupid risk too many took writing Trump off.

We had Hitler waiting in the wings and too many people yawning about it.
