One of my regrets is never having had a Golden Retriever, but I've moved to smaller dogs partly because of the poop factor. One of my best dogs was Angel who was a German Shorthaired Pointer. I took her to the lake all the time. Boy, did she love the water and she was smart too. :)

I think you would find it rewarding to adopt an older dog. Apparently, 7 is considered senior but even at that age they have a lot of life left.

Most of them are too far away for me only because of Harvey's stress level in the car but I keep looking anyway on the off chance there is a dog not too far south of Bellingham. I couldn't/wouldn't adopt a dog without a meet'n'greet with Harvey.
