A problem is that if you really want to understand the Bible, you also need to immerse yourself in Neolithic and Bronze age cultures that have existed for millenia. Otherwise you will have no real clue what much of it means. The story of Onan is often taken as a warning about the evils of masturbation. But, what it really is about Onan's refusal to impregnate the childless widow of his brother and how that challenged the system of inheritance. And there is a lot of stories about the ins and outs of inheritance in those cultures. Which resonates not at all with cultures in industrialized countries with the exception of the very wealthy. For most, the struggle over who gets grandma's broach may seem to be life or death, but that really pales in significance to who got what patch of land way back when.

So understanding the Bible via western literature is a better route than vice versa. Western literature has distilled out the relevant parts from the hard to understand and pretty pointless parts that lost their relevance thousands of years ago.
