It's hard to believe that the OEMs would pay up front...

On the retail side, I'm told that the sell through of Soap is outstanding. This probably accounts for the impression that MCRE has a huge retail presense. If so, this could only work to their advantage when the market becomes ripe for when the higher end products are ready to be sold at retail.

As far as competition, it really depends on the main target. It's so niche oriented right now. Companies such as Strata could pose some threat, but they have weak marketing and a much smaller R&D budget. Microsoft is snapping up companies like SoftImage and DimensionX to compete but they are probably suffering from the transition effect...

Adobe and 3DStudio Max is probably the biggest threat. Wavefront maybe.. it's hard to tell unless we know the distribution sell through.

Check out rags like Computer Graphics World and Web Techniques... always good editorial.
