>>This discussion continues to be interesting in that it seems to be more of a defense of competing narratives than a debate. 30-40 years ago I visited my folks in their retirement community and created a bit of a kerfuffle by correcting SS recipients who were insisting that their SS checks were a return on the money that they had put in and were horrified that I might think otherwise. The SS narrative has become more sophisticated than that but the underlying reaction seems to be still the same.

My mother in law ordered me to lace her house and not come back over this issue. I didn’t see her for five years. Honest truth. My wife and kids would visit them at Christmas while I stayed with my family.

It was a serious issue. “We worked to pay in that money.” “Sorry, it wasn’t enough to cover what you get.”

I mean, she was pretty crazy to start with, but sometime honesty is not the best policy.

Well, SS does mail out to me periodic statements of how much I have paid in (by year) and what my estimated benefits will be based on several retirement ages. So if you mean that what I get paid back is not in fact an actual result of just my own money, invested all those years, you may or may not be correct. Depends where you are on the curve, and what your lifespan ends up being. Some people contribute way more than they get back and others do the reverse.
