BW Adds KVH Connectivity Services to 45 More Vessels, and Extends Airtime Agreement for Prior Vessels

Additional vessels will receive KVH VSAT antennas, connectivity, and news and entertainment content services

MIDDLETOWN, R.I., June 04, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- KVH Industries, Inc., (Nasdaq:KVHI) has announced that BW Group, a worldwide leader in maritime energy transportation, has chosen KVH’s connectivity services for 45 additional vessels in its fleet. The two companies will also continue with a connectivity contract for the LPG and LNG vessels in BW’s fleet that have had KVH’s VSAT systems and services since 2013.

“We chose KVH because of their commitment to excellence, the ease of working with a sole provider, and the cost advantages that we can achieve with fast, reliable connectivity and global coverage,” says Tor-Egil Gjulem, BW Group’s global head of procurement. “Connectivity is the key to digitalization of many maritime operational functions.”

BW has more than 80 years’ experience in maritime energy transportation, and has a large fleet that includes product tankers, LPG and LNG carriers, FSRUs, dry bulk carriers, chemical tankers, offshore vessels, and crude carriers.

“We are thrilled to work with a maritime leader such as BW, whose commitment to performance, operational efficiency, and crew welfare is well known,” says Mark Guthrie, vice president, Asia Pacific, for KVH. “The fact that they are choosing to add more vessels, based on their experience with KVH for the past five years, is a testament to the strong relationship that has developed between our two companies.”

For the 45 additional vessels, BW has chosen the dual mode C/Ku-band TracPhone® V11-IP satellite antenna system and the Ku-band TracPhone V7-HTS; the particular system for each vessel is dependent on type of vessel. The TracPhone V11-IP and the TracPhone V7-HTS are designed for KVH’s mini-VSAT Broadbandsm connectivity service. The vessels will also receive news and entertainment content via KVH’s IP-MobileCastTM content delivery service.

“With our vessels transiting the oceans, it is extremely important to have a connectivity provider like KVH, which has the technical and service capability to address issues immediately, and ensure that our fleet is always benefitting from uninterrupted connectivity,” says Juzer Vasi, head of business solutions – fleet, for BW.

KVH is a mobile tech innovator that provides connectivity solutions for commercial maritime, leisure marine, and land mobile applications on vessels and vehicles, including the award-winning TracPhone and TracVision® product lines, the global mini-VSAT Broadband network, and AgilePlans™ Connectivity as a Service (CaaS). I attended the annual meeting of shareholders last week and was able to ask all the questions I wanted after the meeting. The annual meeting only lasts a few minutes, and all that it actually involves is the reading and accepting the results of the four questions in the proxy statement.

As mentioned in the 2018 first quarter report, shipments of VSAT products increased 62% compared to the first quarter of 2017 and 50% compared to the fourth quarter of 2017. I think the quarter before it was 16% year over year. The old range of 250-300 per quarter is now 300+ obviously, but they would not narrow it down at all. My guess is that the V3IP-HTS and V11IP-HTS are also probably going to happen too, but they would not disclose any non-public information. C-band is staying and not going away. Not a single system has been returned under the Agile plans. Payback on these systems is around 24 months for KVH.

The $4.5M SKY Perfect JSAT Corp investment in 375,000 shares of KVHI stock was at a 10% premium. Half of the proceeds went to pay down debt as required by their bank agreement. SJC likes to take a small stake in companies with whom they partner; they are not working on any new technology together.

Saudi Arabia is trying to build their own defense industry and will be their own systems integrator once they finally purchase the KVH TACNAV systems. This really has nothing to do with sequestration or sanctions. Just waiting on internal Saudi finalization.

The photonic chip is proceeding well and they have gone through several iterations. Product will be sampling later this year and will go to autonomous vehicle manufacturers for evaluation. Looking to make them available for around $200. No one else has got anything like it.

VectorNav is helping with systems for autonomous drones. The inertial navigation business is really doing well commercially.

They shipped about 30 systems so far for AMPV (3000 vehicles will be built). They are designed in. On the other hand, probably 240,000 JLTV vehicles will be built but systems are only added as requirements or customers need or want them but are not required or designed into the contract.

Overall everything sounded extremely positive.

Marine Communications Leader KVH Introduces LTE System for Fast, Affordable Internet Access Offshore

Boaters can enjoy significantly higher data speeds and greater Internet range offshore than cellphones alone provide, in an all-in-one solution

MIDDLETOWN, RI – June 20, 2018 – KVH Industries, Inc., (Nasdaq: KVHI), a leading global satellite communications provider, is introducing the TracPhone® LTE-1 marine communications system designed to provide Internet access in U.S. waters more than 20 miles offshore, with data download speeds up to 100 Mbps. The system, which utilizes LTE Advanced (LTE-A) cellular network technology, is compact and affordable enough for a vast array of small and mid-size recreational boats—including sailboats, center consoles, fishing boats, and more—that until now have had few options besides the boater’s own cellphone for accessing the Internet while on the water. With the TracPhone LTE-1, boaters can access the Internet at twice the range and up to 10 times the data speed of typical cellphone performance offshore, with connectivity for multiple onboard devices.

“We used the TracPhone LTE-1 on our 36 Invincible, Gaff Reflexes, for a saltwater fishing tournament, and we were far enough offshore to where we typically lose signal, but with the LTE-1 we never lost service,” says Kirk Beattie, owner of Preferred Marine Sales Group, in Pompano Beach, FL. “We were streaming music clearer than ever, and Wi-Fi-based telephone and email applications came through with no problem. KVH’s TracPhone LTE-1 is truly impressive equipment: The size is perfect, it can fit on any center console, and you can’t beat the performance and clarity.”

The TracPhone LTE-1 is designed to enable various applications for mobile connectivity, such as streaming HD videos and music; Wi-Fi-based voice, messaging, collaboration, and video applications; browsing the Internet; and posting on social media—all while offshore.

“We believe the TracPhone LTE-1 will be a game changer for boaters who want to stay connected with HD streaming, video chatting, and more,” says Martin Kits van Heyningen, KVH’s chief executive officer. “We’ve taken the same end-to-end approach we use with our satellite-based products to offer the best experience for our customers by providing everything they need—from hardware to airtime—to enjoy fast Internet access on the boat.”

A complete system, the TracPhone LTE-1 includes a high-gain dual antenna array, modem, GPS, and Wi-Fi router inside a 34 cm (13 in) diameter dome. A single cable connects the antenna to a belowdecks Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) injector to provide power to the system. The PoE can also be used to create a local area network (LAN) to facilitate faster data speeds; without the LAN, users can rely solely on the secure Wi-Fi router built into the dome to provide easy, convenient connectivity. The TracPhone LTE-1 uses cellular technology from two of the leading LTE carriers in the U.S., automatically switching between them to ensure the most seamless coverage available.

The TracPhone LTE-1 system is priced at $1,699 MSRP, with a flexible, month-to-month airtime plan providing 20 GB of data for $199 per month with no annual contract; the cost for additional data is $9.99 per gigabyte. The system is designed for use in U.S. waters only (including Hawaii and Alaska), and KVH is exploring expanding the product for use beyond U.S. waters in the future.
