Those are good examples of doing good for the side you are on but not clearly a moral good.

You can't be 100 percent certain with no context at all (and I pretty much didn't give any) but its not far from 100% IMO. Its not even that I just said "shoot the hostage taker", but rather shoot one who was directly going to kill or harm the hostage, or in my other example shooting a suicide bomber before he can kill a bunch of people in a crowd. Even if the hostage taker or suicide bomber is doing so in the service of a good cause (and I would say that this normally isn't the case, and I think that's putting it mildly) the tactics they use for their good cause would normally make it justified and important to stop them.
