Are you under any illusions that this is thought out?

It is a knee-jerk reaction on the part of reactionaries. Many of whom are rooted in the 1950s when the US could act unilaterally and expect the world to follow our lead.

So, we will pull out. Europe will make some noises about renegotiating, but Iran will balk. More trade deals will be announced, sans US companies. Our positions will weaken even more.

Bibi, will be agitating for the US to attack Iran.

"will the USA be trying to sanction European nations if they continue to trade with Iran? "
That would include the entire EU, Great Brexit, Russia, and China.

" so what happens then?"
US takes ball and goes home, world keeps playing, with imaginary ball. Nobody acts like they miss US.

Off to the bookmobile.

That's how I understand it too. It also has a lot to do with the global currency being dollars. Which might hasten it becoming some other currency.
