Brad, while I can't give you a take on Lucent I did look at the PE yesterday and it give me chills when I realize that I went long on LU at 84 awhile back and actually made money. At the time I did not even look at the PE only the charts. I guess a person should just forget PE's, future earnings, etc. and just go buy the darned things.

Why LU is at PE of 86

It isn't 86, they earn in the neighborhood of $2-$4 / year but
will have special "charges", I suppose, that will mess up the look-up
tables. This next quarter will be biggest of the year, $2.50 or
so I think was last year's. If they can eke out a consistent 15%
earnings growth they will outperform their own expectations. PE on
next year's estimates is in the 30-40 range, I believe.
