President Trump and the United States Should Not Help ZTE

by Erick Erickson

ZTE is a Chinese company of ill repute that has potentially spied on Americans.

Chinese company ZTE has fallen on hard times and President Trump declared on Twitter that he wants to help China help ZTE. That is a terrible idea. The Department of Defense has banned ZTE phones because of a serious concern that the company may be using its phones' microphones and cameras to spy on Americans and surreptiously transmit from inside secure facilities.

ZTE is a dubious company and the fact that it could not keep going is something Americans should cheer. It is one less potential corporate spy for China. Likewise, its phones have largely copied American and other nations' designs with zero originality.

Chinese tech companies have long lacked originality and have pilfered from better companies. The Chinese government has likewise been recruiting its companies to serve as espionage agents. Even DJI, the Chinese drone company, is suspected of using its cell phone apps for nefarious purposes.

President Trump should not want the American government to help ZTE or any other company out of a mess. The free market should do its work and something else will rise from the ashes. But more importantly, the United States should not be helping a communist nation prop up a communist run entity that uses its technology to spy on us.

[ And to help Iran and North Korea too. Tell me traitor is too strong a word. This is aiding and abetting. ]

While I appreciate the President wants to make a show of good faith to China, this is not the way to do it.
