Marijuana: Canadian Senate Approves Bill C-45 "The Cannabis Act" Great news!

Senate passes marijuana bill ctvnews.ca

Recreational marijuana sales likely to begin in Canada this summer.

After a third and final reading, the Senate this afternoon amended and approved the Liberal government’s bill to legalize sales of cannabis products for adult use across Canada.

The bill, which was hotly debated in the House of Commons before going to the Senate, comes back to the House with a number of new amendments or suggestions, which the House will consider before ratifying the bill or making further changes.

One key Senate amendment was one that would let provinces and territories opt out of allowing individuals to grow up to four marijuana plants at home.

The final vote in the Senate was 56 to 30, with one member abstaining.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had previously promised to legalize cannabis use by adults this summer, and that now seems likely to happen. Once the bill receives Royal Assent, provincial and territorial governments will need another eight to 12 weeks to complete their plans for regulating retail sales.

This approval by the Senate is a huge step forward for Canada’s legal cannabis industry
