David,

I'm sorry that I can't help you much. I'm a UNIX user but I'm not entirely familiar with the O/S. It's quite a complex beast compared to Windows and I usually leave the details to our trained staff of support technicians.

From my point of view the main value of UNIX is its robustness. In over ten years of running UNIX workstations I've only had the machines hang on a few occassions. Some of those could probably have been avoided with a little more care.

To get more information on how to manage the operating system I would simply refer you to a host of good books on the subject that you can find at a decent bookstore such as Barnes & Noble. If you have specific questions you could probably get answers from one of the Unix oriented newsgroups on the Internet such as comp.language.os.unix or similar.

Good luck.

Dr G.

I use a Windows NT Workstation (NT4W) to run all my Unix accounting applications. I use <alt+Tab> to visit my receivable inquiry just like any other Win application on the desktop.

The Unix server has ethernet card as does my workstation. Communications is via TCP/IP and a super telnet that runs off desktop just like Excel, project manager, et. al. All of my data files are in a volume on the Unix server (backed up every night at 22:00 with everything else on system).

The missing piece is software that runs on the server and client which gives a "SMB" (essentially Windows Print and file share) app on the Unix server. This software is excellent... have used it for nearly a year. Follow this ->> starcon.com to find out more.

Mr. Gleitman:

Unix is a highly advantageous OS in the sense that you can customize
the way it operates. Unix was built from the ground up for networking. Furthermore if you like a windows type environment you can run X windows. A good on-line source for learning about running Unix (Linux) can be found at: linux.org At this location you can download the OS (free) and you can read about installing Linux and all of it's free software.

If you end up using this powerful platform further information which
has been of great help to me can be found in Tackett and Gunter's book
"Using Linux, Third Edition." The book is about $60 and includes
the various versions of Linux available on CD's (Red Hat, Slackware, Caldera's).
