Giuliani and Bloomberg cleaned up the homeless situation when they were mayors here. The homeless were literally taken off the Street and put in shelters. There was a big dialogue about that since some homeless people wanted to be homeless and live on the street. They felt homelessness was their choice. Under the new mayor, Diblasio, homelessness has returned.
So, I know homelessness can be reduced dramatically if the people in charge are sincere about it.
It got pretty disgusting with people sprawled out on the streets on Third Average and Lexington Ave, for example in shopping areas.
Now I don't know what percent of the homeless were actually rehabilitated? The motivation to clean up the streets was not primarily a liberal undertaking.

In Hawaii we know how they can solve their problem because we've been on the receiving end of it for 20 years

West Coast States have been caught giving homeless one way tickets to Hawaii for at least 20 years now

Now that's compassion for you

IMO, first thing is end the drug war and take $$ out of drugs

Then start a war against big pharma and the corrupt mental "health" experts who are nothng less that State approved drug dealers for Big Pharma

See how that works for a while.

In the Depression we had CC projects.

I'm sure those can be adapted to issues that need addressing today.

The truly mentally ill are a small slice of the homeless problem.

I personally am sick of seeing criminals walk because they were "Temporarily insane", i.e. drunk or stoned, when they committed the rape, the burglary, the assault, the murder, etc. We see that here in Hawaii on a regular basis. 3 psychiatrists determine (after the fact) that you were mentally unfit(the cause is not an issue) at the time of the crime and you walk.
