Because we do NOT have a free market in the health care industry. It is a massively regulated, heavily lobbied, red tape encrusted, calcified, opaque mess. Very few areas of our economy are as fucked up as health care. We are closer to socialism in health care than capitalism. And that is part of the problem. If we had free markets and the ability to sign up for any carrier world wide, based on a basket or a pick and choose model, and it was good across state lines or anywhere else and we could legally buy drugs from the lowest priced source anywhere in the world, and doctors could compete for our services, and on and on...all the things we'd expect out of a free market, then prices would be lower.
