I think AFFX, INCY and other like firms are selling shovels in the gold rush - very high potential returns without the risk or regulatory hassles of drug development.

This market seems to be divided between technologies which automate the collection of data (AFFX, SYNTANI, HYSEQ) and technologies which manipilute the data (INCY). It seems INCY and AFFX are starting to fish in each ponds, though.

In biotechnology the companies that sell the technology will always make more money over time, short term or long term, but especially short term than those after the answers. But none of them are good short term investments unless you can deal in split seconds to take advantage of ridiculous implications like Geron's "discovery of an anti-aging enzyme" to short its stock after a 50% overnight increase. Biotech has suffered terribly from uninformed hype. It's true value is still unrealized and several years away. Affymetrix is not selling technology it is literally giving it away in order to monopolize what will be an unbelievably lucrative diagnostic revolution. But until they actually have their $150,000 Hybridization and Detection Equipment in hospitals worldwide and are selling their genechips hand over fist to tell doctors what's going on inside their patients Affymetrix won't make much money at all.
