Hi Dwight, Article...Intel Gets Fed's Preliminary OK On C&T Deal...

Intel's pending acquisition of Chips and Technologies was granted a preliminary approval by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).
However, because of concerns about the acquisition's impact in markets "for certain computer components," among those graphics chips, the FTC will "continue the investigation into the lawfulness of the acquisition."

An acquisition of Chips, which currently holds a leadership position in the notebook graphics market, was perceived by some to give Intel, Santa Clara, Calif., unfair control of the graphics market.

Intel will introduce its own desktop 2-D/3-D/video graphics accelerator chip, known as the i740, in late February, according to sources. At about the same time, Chips will release a version of the same chip for the notebook market.

Both companies acquired 3-D graphics technology in separate licenses from Real3D, a Lockheed-Martin company based in Orlando, Fla.

Because Intel executives kept details of the i740 under tight secrecy, competitors say they have been unable to determine the extent of Intel's potential control in the market. However, industry and legal analysts have noted the possibility that Intel might "bundle" or integrate a graphics chip with a core logic chipset, as it bundles a chipset with a motherboard. In addition, Intel executives publicly discussed integrating the graphics chip into the core logic at an analysts' briefing where the company described its plans to address the low-cost PC market.

Just another reason for Intel to move up tommorrow. :-)
