Doesn't this all go back to widespread hatred of, or at least strong prejudice against, the Jews in Europe, Del? Didn't that sentiment have a very strong religious component stoking it? Anyway, I have read repeatedly that almost EVERYONE who was someone knew what was happening to the people who disappeared, the general gist of it all if not the details, and that a lot of people saw Hitler as doing the "dirty work" of wiping out minorities who were feared or resented or disliked--not just Jews, but other maligned groups like gays and gypsies--who didn't fit in with the Aryan, Christian mainstream society.
