And yet they had parties from the very beginning didn't they? Washington was a Federalist and Jefferson was a Jeffersonian Democrat and the two parties detested each other.

Adams created a law (The Sedition Act) which was used to throw Jeffersonian Democrats into jail for daring to speak out against the government (free speech). After Jefferson was elected president he pardoned them.

Btw, the Sedition Act was used to stop new Americans from voting and made it easier to deport foreigners. Some things seem new but they're as old as the country itself.
