Grand Jury Indictment Handed Down Against Harvey Weinstein

From powerful movie mogul to common criminal, Weinstein is about to face the music.

Harvey Weinstein has been officially indicted by a New York state grand jury.

He’s looking at a lot of time, and he deserves every minute of it.

The Manhattan District Attorney's office announced Wednesdayin a press release that Weinstein had been indicted on charges of first- and third-degree rape, as well as committing a criminal sexual act.

The most serious of these charges, first-degree rape, carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison under New York law. Weinstein surrendered to police on Friday.

He’s already lost his company. He’s facing additional charges in Los Angeles and London. The charges against him are on the state and federal level, as investigators look into the possibility that he violated federal stalking laws, in his attempts to intimidate some of his victims into silence.

Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance has expressed his intent to try the case on the up-and-up, and not as a media circus.

Good luck with that.

"Our office will try this case not in the press, but in the courtroom where it belongs," Vance said in a statement. The defendant’s recent assault on the integrity of the survivors and the legal process is predictable. We are confident that when the jury hears the evidence, it will reject these attacks out of hand."

Weinstein’s despicable acts were brought to the light after Ronan Farrow wrote a feature story for The New Yorker.

The story released a flood of reports from women who have been sexually abused or intimidated by Weinstein, who used his position of power against them.

Weinstein is just one of a host of powerful men who’ve been swept up in the #MeToo movement. Among those outed as abusers has been Matt Lauer, Kevin Spacey, Dustin Hoffman, and Charlie Rose.

Charlie Sheen was also outed as a child rapist by former child star, Corey Feldman, who accused him of taking advantage of a 13 year old Corey Haim, years ago.

Sheen denies the charges, of course.

If no other good comes out of this movement, it at least has made these women feel comfortable about coming forward.

And Harvey Weinstein’s arrest. That’s definitely cool.
