Ascend Communications Inc. Act 1 was boffo, Act 2 is difficult. Ascend had the remote-access market to itself. Now that market is slowing, and new entrants such as Cisco Systems, 3Com and Shiva Corp. are cramping Ascend's style.

Competition is tough, they were doing fine without it.
