MM:

Your perception on Tandem Unix is false. Unix at Tandem is small. Guardian (NSK) is where the action was and is.

Cheers

Thanks Marden, I will put TDM and MNPI in my Yahoo secondary portfolio.

Guardian will probably stay around as long as the HP3000 and its MPE(?). Lots of BIG tandems running NON-STOP apps. Virtually all big iron has adopted Unix base as main or hedge O/s. As long as POSIX dictates features and functions, Unix variants won't differ greatly.

CPQ has ingnored Unix until very recently. Used to irritate the hell out of me. About 1989, We had big & fast Deskpros (486/33+ with big disk cache/stripe) supporting as many as 50+ Xenix/Unix Users with good response time. Compaq beleived that they were oonly selling desktops. They had their heads in the stand until the release of "Quickstart" about 3 years ago. The ProLiants delivered now with Unix have awesome power. Approaches Mainframe capablity of not too many years ago. Even the ProSignia (Compaq's low end single processor server) can be stuffed to be a very capable Unix system. With the IDA (integrated disk array controller) these systems could probably support 2-3X what those old Deskpros did. Impressive stuff comming out of Houston.

Thanks,
RW
