History provides a very clear picture of how we went from animals to modern humans through the evolution of consciousness. We don't have public hanging or have picnics at the battles:

It occurred at Bull Run. On the morning of July 21, 1861, civilians from Washington rode out to Centreville, Virginia, to watch a Union Army made up of very green recruits--they signed up for a 90-day war--march boldly into combat. ... Bull Run soon became known as the "picnic battle."

Or gladiator fights to the death, or torture people openly, or have slaves or legal segregation.

That is great progress. And women can vote :)>.

What I like about Cormac Mccarthy and Larry McMurtry is how well the capture the mental state of mind of the 1800's.

Cormac McCarthy > Quotes
“You never know what worse luck your bad luck has saved you from.” ... “You forget what you want to remember, and you remember what you want to forget.” ... “Scars have the strange power to remind us that our past is real.” ... “Nobody wants to be here and nobody wants to leave.” ... “People were always getting ready for tomorrow.

Larry McMurty

A man that ain't willin' to cheat for a poke don't want it bad enough.

Incompetents invariably make trouble for people other than themselves.

No illusion is more crucial than the illusion that great success and huge money buy you immunity from the common ills of mankind, such as cars that won't start.
