The Toronto Stock Exchange 200 Composite Index gained 1.4% or 89.63 to 6329,59

In comparison, the Oil & Gas Composite Index rose 0.8% or 46.95 to 5799.59. Looking at the sub-components, the Integrated Oils fell 0.6% or 49.16 to 8141.22. The Oil & Gas Producers gained 1.3% or 64.21 to 64.21 to 5070.60 and the Oil & Gas Services gained 2.5% or 59.51 to 2471.87.

STOCK MARKET ACTIVITY

MOST ACTIVES

Paragon Petroleum, Gulf Canada Resources, Canadian Natural Resources, Northstar Energy, Canadian Occidental Petroleum, Anderson Exploration, Petro-Canada and Hurricane Hydrocarbons were among the top 50 most active rtraded issues on the TSE.

Gulfstream Resources gained $1.70 to $6.40, Seven SeasPetroleum $1.30 to $18.90 and Berkley Petroleum $1.10 to $13.10.

Percentage gainers included Gulfstream Resources 36.2% to $6.40, Optima Petroleum 15.2% to $1.90, OGY Petroleum 14.4% to $1.35, Neutrino Resources 12.2% to $1.65, New Cache Petroleum 10.0% to $5.50, Startech Energy 9.9% to $8.85 and Berkley Petroleum 9.2% to $13.10.

On the downside, Talisman Energy fell $1.30 to $36.60, Tri Link Resources $1.25 to $13.00, Chieftain Int'l $1.05 to $26.45, Suncor Energy $0.55 to $43.90, Remington Energy $0.50 to $19.50, Shell Canada A $0.50 to $22.00, Imperial Oil $0.45 to $83.00 and Cabre Exploration $0.40 to $16.75.

Percentage losers included Crown Joule Exploration 12.5% to $1.40, Cavell Energy 10.9% to $0.98, Tri Link Resources 8.8% to $13.00, Rider Resources 7.3% to $4.45, Bonavista Petroleum 7.2% to $3.60, Westfort Energy 7.0% to $0.93, First Calgary 7.0% to $1.07, Triumph Energy 6.9% to $2.70, Int'l Petroleum 6.8% to $5.50, Ocelot Energy B 6.2% to $6.10, Thunder Energy 5.1% to $1.85, Encal Energy 4.7% to $4.05 and Symmetry Resources 4.3% to $1.10.

In review of the oil and gas service companies, as well as those with close ties to the industry, none were found among the 50 most active traded issues on the TSE.

Ensign Resource Services gained $2.00 to $27.00, Dreco Energy Services $1.50 to $40.50, American ECO $1.25 to $16.25 and Artisan Corp. $1.05 to $9.75.

Percentage gainers included Artisan Corp. 12.1% to $9.75, Badger Daylighting 11.7% to $5.25 and Kelman Technologies 9.4% to $1.75.

On the downside, Shaw Industries fell $7.50 to $38.50 and Mullen Transportation $1.00 to $20.00.

Percentage losers included Shaw Industries 16.3% to $38.50, Crew Developement 7.5% to $1.85 and Mullen Transportation 4.8% to $20.00.

There were no 52-week highs or lows.

Over on the Alberta Stock Exchange, Bearcat exploration, Calahoo Petroleum, NTI Resources, Talon Petroleum, Enterprise Developement, Real resources, Oxbow Exploration, DeTech, Circle Energy, Oilexco, First Star Energy, Red Sea Oil and Cubacan Exploration were among the top 30 most active traded issues.

Red Sea Oil gained $0.60 to $3.00, Solid Resources $0.30 to $7.25, Niko Resources $0.26 to $3.91, Bolt Energy $0.16 to $0.78, DeTech $0.16 to $0.96, Clayoquot Resorces $0.15 to $1.15, Deena Energy $0.10 to $0.90, Master Downhole $0.10 to $1.10 and Palmetto Resources $0.10 to $1.10.

Percentage gainers included green Maple Energy 26.1% to $0.29, Bolt Energy 25.8% to $0.78, Red Sea Oil 25.0% to $3.00, DeTech 20.0% to $0.96, Cherryhill Resources 16.7% to $0.35, Clayoquot Resources 15.0% to $1.15, Deena Energy 12.5% to $0.90, Del Mar Energy 11.1% to $0.50 and Prize Energy 11.1% to $0.50.
