The difference is mostly semantic: It's called clemency when they're still serving their sentence and are released early. Pardons are granted to people who've served their sentences or who haven't been convicted and sentenced yet. They can both be called clemency. And regardless of what term is used, innocence is not restored. Alice Marie Johnson deserved a very long sentence ... one can quibble about life, but she was a drug and money laundering kingpin. She's being released because she had a celebrity working for her and a Criminal President wants to hold out a false promise to his conspirators facing indictments in hopes they won't squeal on him.
