NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 14, 1998--

Cumulative Orders Exceeded 115,000 for Full Year;
Installations Pass 80,000

WINSTAR COMMUNICATIONS, INC. (NASDAQ-WCII) reported today that
continued strong demand for its competitive local exchange carrier
(CLEC) services led to major gains in line orders and installations
during the fourth quarter ended December 31, 1997. Line orders for the
period exceeded 40,000, bringing cumulative lines ordered above
118,000. WinStar began 1997 with about 6,000 cumulative lines ordered.

Installations of CLEC lines climbed to 30,000 during the fourth
quarter of the year, compared with about 21,000 installations in the
preceding quarter. Cumulative lines installed stood at approximately
82,000 at 1997 year end, compared with approximately 51,000 at the end
of the third quarter of 1997 and 4,400 lines installed at the end of
1996.

Nathan Kantor, WinStar's President and Chief Operating Officer,
said today the fourth quarter continued a trend of significant
operational progress. "We are very gratified by customer acceptance of our telecommunications services and the rapid growth of our network capacity achieved last year," said Kantor. "WinStar has shown that it
is capable of deploying its wireless fiber network with unmatched
speed and that there is a very substantial market opportunity for our
services. As we extend our CLEC operations to reach 30 large U.S.
markets during 1998, we anticipate reporting additional strong gains
in line orders, installations and other metrics used to measure our
success."
