So those who declared independence from England in 1776 - were they Americans or British?

Those who fought with British Troops against the Americans were from Upper and Lower Canada. Thus the term Canadians. Even though Canada didn't gain full independence until 1867, the war of 1812 gave those living in British North America a sense of being Canadian. Just like those who declared independence in 1776 while technically English, thought of themselves as Americans even though it was years before they beat the English.
